About Corps Bara
Corps Bara is:
Corps: n. Latin for ‘body’ Bara: v. Hebrew for ‘I create’ = body creative/creative body
Driven by a unique choreographic vision, Corps Bara is dedicated to creating contemporary dance experiences with artistic creativity, depth and integrity appropriate for audiences of all ages. Corps Bara provides dancers and choreographers the opportunity to engage their faith and art in a professional, vibrant and meaningful community. The intention of its work is to create conversations inspired by the mystery and reality of God in the world. Corps Bara continues to be shaped by a fusion of our Judeo-Christian roots and the century old Denishawn tradition of creating sanctuary in the theatre.
Corps Bara’s Historic Connection:
Corps Bara’s understands its beginnings in the liturgical dance movement, and its connection to deeper roots in the genesis of contemporary dance itself. Early 20th century American modern dance pioneers Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis were passionate for dance as worship to be offered in the ‘temple’ where it belonged historically. (The denunciation of D. L. Moody at the time won over the passionate promotion of H. E. Fosdick at Riverside Church in NYC, and it was not to be.) Their spiritual choreography went public with a determination to create sanctuary in theatre.
About the Company
Corps Bara calls Calgary, Alberta Canada home and is comprised of a dynamic Youth Company (11-18yrs) and a project based Professional Company. Corps Bara offers its dancers the opportunity to work with local and international choreographers and to perform in a broad spectrum of venues. Corps Bara is committed to strengthening the Canadian dance community through its “Choreographic Mentorship Program” where new works are commissioned by local emerging choreographers.
